Video Contest Criteria & Judging

The video contest is designed to reaffirm the Tar Wars message learned during the classroom presentation. You may wish to encourage your students to create a video and submit it in the video competition.

The video contest will be at the national level. It will not be necessary to submit the videos to the state coordinators unless your particular state wishes to also judge the videos. Do not mail copies of videos. Detailed instructions about how to submit a vidoe are provided.

Criteria/Rules
The AAFP Tar Wars national office has set the following criteria/rules for video submissions. Please be sure to go over these with the students to ensure compliance and avoid disqualification. Failure to comply with the guidelines below could result in a disqualification of the video.

  • Only 4th and 5th grade students who have had the Tar Wars presentation are eligible to submit videos for the contest.
  • Videos must incorporate creative and original ideas. Depictions of cartoon, video game, and movie/television characters; celebrities; movie themes does not constitute creativity and originality.
  • Videos must deliver a clear and positive message about being tobacco-free. Death themes and negative health consequences, cigarettes, ashtrays, coffins, people smoking, etc. are not considered positive messages and will not be accepted. A small no smoking symbol is acceptable.
  • Videos must be free of copyrighted materials and may not use brand names or logos. No Star Wars themes or characters may be used. Copyrighted music cannot be used. Choose music in the public domain or your own original composition.
  • Videos should not contain profane language, violence, sex, or personal attacks on people or organizations.
  • Students may work with a group of 4th and 5th grade students to create a video, but there must be a lead student's name on the entry forms.
  • Videos submitted without an entry form and release form will not be judged. Entry and release forms may be e-mailed to: Jhaas@aafp.org or mailed to: Joyce Haas, AAFP Tar Wars Video, 11400 Tomahawk Creek Parkway, Leawood, KS 66211.
  • Videos should be at least 30 seconds in length and should not exceed 3 minutes in length.
  • Video submission deadline is May 17, 2012. Entry and release forms must be received by May 17, 2012, as well.

Judging
After the contest closes, videos will be judged to see if they present accurate information and comply with the requirements of the contest. Videos will be rated by a panel of judges from AAFP based on message (communicates a clear and positive message to remain tobacco-free), creativity, and originality. A winner will be selected and named at the Tar Wars National Conference in Washington, DC. 

Prizes will be awarded to first-, second-, and third-place winners at the National Conference.
